July 2020 Monthly Wrap Up // My Covid 19th Birthday, Quarantine Blues, And Blogger Love

So July is over. This year is wild. It’s literally August but mentally I’m still in April. It’s been another low-key horrible month for me, so let’s talk about it!

Reading

1. Wicked As You Wish ★★ // I really really wanted to love this book but I absolutely did not it put me in a reading slump the world building was a mess and there were too many characters.
2. A Thousand Beginnings And Endings ★★ // Why had I never heard about this book? It’s such an amazing anthology of retellings of Asian fairytales and stories that I loved so much!
3. Loveboat, Taipei ★★★★ //
I loved this book so much. There were definitely some problematic and annoying parts, I’m a dancer like Ever and my family lives in Taipei where this was set so this book was so beautiful it felt like it was written for me!!
4.
Of Curses And Kisses ★★★// This was a pretty cute diverse boarding school retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

5. Cinder ★★★★★ (reread) // Yes I reread the entire Lunar Chronicles series and gave them all 5 stars okay deal with it. Also this book hits different during covid. why weren’t they social distancing???
6. Scarlet
★★★★★ (reread) // I still love this book.
7. Cress ★★★★★ (reread) //
I still love this book and also Thorne.
8. Winter ★★★★★ (reread) //
I still love this book its freaking incredible and deserves 6 stars!!

9. Forest of A Thousand Lanterns ★★★★// This was such a great Asian retelling of the evil queen from Snow White, it got dark wow. A bit slow at times though.
10. With The Fire On High ★★★★// This book made me so hungry! I loved seeing cooking and it was unique and cool to see a teen mom too.
11. Anna K. ★★★// This was a pretty fun retelling of Anna Karenina (which I have never read but I looked up on shmoop), the characters were kind of awful but it was so entertaining. also this song is literally “illicit affairs” from folklore and I will not be convinced otherwise.
12. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ★★★☆☆ // My library hold was finally ready lol this was good but nowhere near as good as the original trilogy.

I’ve been doing more blog hopping this month! Here are some posts I loved ❤

Life

  • The US is a flaming dumpster fire and I hate it here. I never go out but apparently I’m the only one since now cases are spiking, my state is a hotspot (12,000+ cases a day ayyy) and I’m pretty sure I’ll be quarantined all year and I don’t think I’m going back to college campus in the fall so that really sucks. Love paying $$$ for zoom u, it really is the college experience!!!!
  • consequently… I’ve been overall feeling really bad. sad vibes only. not a great month mentally.

IMG_9327.JPG

  • I chopped off about 15 inches of hair to donate and good riddance it was weighing me down. This is the 5th time I’ve donated lol.
  • It was my birthday. I celebrated my covid 19th, aka turned 19 in covid-19 quarantine (sweet 16 who?), stayed home all day and ate cake.

IMG_9296

  • I baked a ton including my birthday cake and these lemon matcha macarons.
  • folklore!!! I’m obsessed. My favorite song right now is illicit affairs, but I also love exile, cardigan, and every single song.
  • The book blogger award (hosted by May and Marie!) nominations were this month and oh my gosh you guys ❤ I was nominated several times for a variety of awards and each notification I got truly made my day. This has been a really bad month (and year tbh) for me mentally and I’ve been feeling really shitty and reading all the kind things you said about me was truly amazing and helpful. To everyone who nominated me THANK YOU ❤ ❤
    • Also this technically happened in august but I haven’t posted this wrap up yet but I made it to the second round??? for best young adult blogger and… and… best overall book blogger????? I’m so flabbergasted and honored I truly was not expecting this thank you thank you thank you so much ❤ (and also vote here for me pls… (but only if you want lol))

  1. What a lovely wrap up! And woohooo for getting several nominations! 🙂
I really liked both Loveboat, Taipei and Anna K when I read them earlier this year. I haven’t read the others, but they’re all on my TBR 😀 no, wrong, I’ve read the Lunar Chronicles, of course. But they’ve become such a part of my life, I somehow forgot about them. But I love this series so, so much!
Happy beginning of August, have a great month ❤

  2. I’m glad you enjoyed With The Fire on High, that’s one of my favourite books I’ve read so far this year. And congrats on the award nominations Kay, they are very well deserved! Have a great August 🙂

  3. Ooh you had such a good reading month! I’ve read With The Fire On High, Loveboat, Taipei and Cinder out of those you mentioned and I loved all of them, even though my ship didn’t sail in Loveboat haha. I haven’t finished the rest of the Lunar Chronicles though – I started Scarlett but then just wasn’t really in the mood for it so I DNFd it unfortunately.
Yes to folklore too!! I love it so much and I agree that illicit affairs is one of my faves, alongside the last great american dynasty and betty. such an amazing album <3.
The covid situation in America is honestly so bad and I’m so sorry that you won’t be going back to college right now! In the UK we’re allowed out more but just have to wear masks in shops and stuff but I think cases are still going down overall, besides from spikes in some areas (which have stricter regulations). It’s been nice to go out a little more now, especially to see friends again (still from a distance though). It will be so weird going back to college in September too!
Loved reading this wrap up and I hope you had a great birthday (love the pun haha).
    Have a great August💗

    1. Thanks! Ugh I was team Xavier all the way I was so annoyed at how he was treatedddd 😦 The Lunar Chronicles are amazing I hope you get to them eventually! Illicit Affairs is so amazing the bridge of it is just ahhh! America is trash lol rip glad you’re allowed out more where you are.

  4. I completely relate to mentally still being in April. It’s been very hot in my area lately and I keep thinking “this is such weird spring weather???” Wild.
Ugh the US truly is a trash fire. I’m sorry that this month has been rough, and that you have to do college through zoom. That fully and completely sucks. Happy belated birthday, though! And congrats on your blogger award nominations – you absolutely deserve it! ❤ Hope your August is better than you expect!

  5. first off, i definitely feel you about mentally being in April. and A THOUSAND BEGINNINGS AND ENDINGS sounds so interesting, I definitely need to read it now. I laughed at the “why weren’t they social distancing???” for your snippet on CINDER — i’ve never read it and honestly… now i feel like i have to just to understand this comment. FOREST OF A THOUSAND LANTERNS also seems soooo good. i’ve heard so much about it. same with the other three books in this section (all of which are on my TBR so i’m glad that you enjoyed them all heheh even though THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES just feels sort of unnecessary to be written?? by suzanne collins not in your post HAHAH I’d love to hear if you feel differently)

thanks for linking the blog posts I will have to go check those out !!! and HAHA I feel that about the US being a dumpster fire and zoom university. Great times!! AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY! those macarons look SO GOOD.

Love this wrap up sm!!! im now craving macarons so bad hahahah

    1. Mentally this year is just a whole mess lol. Yes a thousand beginnings and endings was fantastic I highly recommend! And haha a large plot point of cinder is there’s a plague killing millions of people…but they still go to crowded markets and balls with no social distancing??? Forest of a Thousand Lanterns was wonderful too, and Ballad was a fun read even if it wasn’t great.

Thanks so much 🙂 hope you have a lovely August 💕

I really want to get to Loveboat Taipei, Anna K and also Of Curses and Kisses, they sound like so much fun. I am also SO AMPED about The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, sad you didn’t like it though 😦 And also With The Fire On High <3<3

Ah happy belated birthday, I don't think I wished you. Those macaroons look divine!!

    Sending all the love xx

  7. happy belated birthday! i’m sorry you had to spend it during this mess 😭 and i’m sorry to hear that your state is a hotspot! texas also isn’t doing so great, and i’m just so frustrated with everyone who continues to be so careless (and also the government). and i’m glad you enjoyed forest of a thousand lanterns!! i remember also being surprised that it got dark even though i knew it was a villain origin story, but i loved xifeng so much ❤ hope you have better mental health in august!

    1. Thanks May! Agh California is the worst in the country but at least our governor seems… pretty competent compared to Texas… but at least it’s still better than the Florida government? the whole country is a mess lmao rip us. Yess that book was dark and amazing! ❤

  8. Happy late birthday! I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a rough time with your mental health and I hope you’ll be feeling better soon! This year really has been hitting us hard, but at least there are always amazing books to go back to 😉 I’m still leaving my house as little as possible, and I wish more people would do so as well, it’s so frustrating to see those who don’t care about this pandemic. I’m so happy you donated your hair! I’ve done it a couple of times myself and it’s amazing!

  9. Happy late birthday Kay!! That’s amazing that you donated your hair for the fifth time, and 15 inches is a lot! I’ve done it a few times, but the most was probably only 12 inches. Congrats on all of your nominations for the awards, and I hope you have a wonderful August 💕🙂

    1. Thanks aria ❤ 12 inches is still wonderful! Tbh I was going for 12 inches but my mom and I cut it ourselves and we're no pros and we ended up chopping off more… but it's fine lol my hair was way too long anyways. hope you have a great august too!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. A few years ago my hair was long, but not super long, so I was going to just cut off 10 inches because that’s the least you could do, and then because of trimming it it ended up being way more, and my hair was so short 😂 That’s awesome that you and your mom cut it!

  10. It being August but mentally April is such a mood 😭 Happy belated birthday!! Omgg, Kay those macarons look AMAZING!! And yayy for cutting your hair! (I am a huge fan of all types of haircuts, especially when you cut off loads and feel super light afterward 😄). I’m so happy you loved Loveboat, Taipei! I’ve been meaning to read it for a while now, and every positive review I see makes me even more excited!

Also, I absolutely feel this, “I never go out but apparently I’m the only one”. Why are American’s so stupid?? 😭😭 I hope your semester goes well even if it’s online! My school keeps on switching their mind every few days over whether we’re in person, hybrid, or fully online so I’ll prob be with you at good ol’ zoom u. Thank you for sharing my post!! I’m so happy you enjoyed it ❤

Congratulations on getting to the second round of the awards!! You absolutely deserve it 💕💕 I hope you have a fantastic August!

    1. 2020 really messing with us all who even knows what month or day or hour it is?? Ahh thanks 🙂 I’m low-key obsessed with baking macarons now, and super happy with my new hair (bc I was too lazy to wash or brush it when I never went out lmaooo). America really is a mess… ah good ole zoom u, I hope you figure it out eventually. thanks so much, congrats to you (and Malka!) as well ❤ ❤

  11. I’m reading With the Fire on High and really enjoying it! YES folklore, yes, AMAZING! Happy birthday (although a little bit late… ). Congrats on the nominations! I really hope you’re going to have a great month of August!

  12. Honestly, it feels so surreal that it’s August, but it’s like April all over again. My state has finally got over the second peak from which cases were going up to 600+ and it now eventually died down to ‘normal cases’ like 250 or less. My school is doing hybrid, but they literally don’t want to talk about anything important without saying the same old things.

    Happy birthday!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. It really does. That’s nice that it died down… but also when I read this comment I was like… wait… 600 cases that’s so low I wish… I wish we could have even 6,000 cases a day that would be low enough for me :’) the hybrid thing is so frustrating nobody has any idea what’ happening lol hope it goes well for you. thanks ❤

  13. I’m so sorry about July (I legit just typed APRIL instead of August and that really does sum up 2020 and then I realized this post was about July🙃) not being good for you :// I definitely understand the quarantine just weighing so heavily, I’m in a hotspot state as well and things are just looking…really not good. I hope August is better for you and that the US gets itself together soon- and happy belated birthday as well.❤️ Sending you all the happy vibes and a virtual hug, Kay xx

  14. Happy belated Birthday, Kay! And congratulations on the nominations too 🥳 That’s amazing! Those macarons also look super delicious! I also cut my hair recently too–actually I shaved all my hair off, and omg it was so liberating I had a big ugly cry when I was done 😂 I hope your mental health is better this month. If you ever need an ear, you can always reach out! Big hugs and sending all the positive vibes 🙂

  16. Happy late birthday! My brother had his birthday in the middle of the lockdown as well, but I don’t think he minded too much, he’s such a homebody 😀
I loved Forest of a Thousand Lanterns and With the Fire on High so I’m glad you enjoyed them! I’ve got Loveboat Taipei on my Kindle but I hadn’t heard much about it (not quite sure when I bought it) so it sounds promising from your rec! I had the same problem with Wicked as You Wish, I much preferred the second half where the number of character halved and they were in one place where we didn’t keep getting fantasy/urban/dystopia world-building thrown at our heads. It felt like I could barely take a breath but not in a good way.
Also folklore hit at the exact right time for me and I love it.

    1. Thanks so much Lucy ❤ haha yeah I didn't mind that much, I wish I could have hung out with friends but it could be worse. Those books are so amazing! Ahh I'm glad somebody had the same issue with Wicked As you Wish! I've heard such amazing things about Rin Chupeco and even about that book so I really wanted to love it… but I was drowning in info dumps and confusingness lol I was like pls give me a break. folkloreeeeee ❤

  17. Happy Birthday! And congratulations on the nomination! I really hope you win, I love your blog.
I haven’t read Lunar Chroniles yet (please don’t hate me!) but after reading this post I can’t wait to read them. I just added Cinder to my cart!!!!🙈

  18. Thank you for this HIGHLY relatable content! Also had my birthday in July (20th for me) and it was lowkey kind of depressing LOL. Also YES to folklore being amazing, it’s the emo soundtrack to quarantine that we all need. I’ve been listening to mad woman on repeat and thinking sadly about how my college basically isn’t letting anyone back in the fall 😦

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Glad you can relate. Yay July babies 🙂 although this birthday was… not the greatest lol. Aw that sucks. My college is letting people back but dorms are all singles, most of the campus facilities are closed, and all my classes are online so… it’s not really worth it rip

  19. – Gosh I think everyone collectively had really meh Julys.
    – HAPPY BIRTHDAY
    – I am in awe of how many books you managed to read (I read like 5) (All 5 were PJO) (I don’t regret it)
    – Is folklore really that good? I still haven’t listened to it but it seems like everyone’s obsessed.
    – CONGRATS ON THE NOMINATION! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY
    – Wishing you happy (or as close as you can get) college-ing in Sepetember

  20. Okay, there’s a LOT to unpack here so brace yourself for an ESSAY of a comment [but I’ll try to keep it mostly short and sweet]…

First of all: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you were able to have a lovely day [even if you were stuck in side]. Sending you a MASSIVE birthday hug! Enjoy this year – it’s your last year as a teenager [technically… although I’m 23 and still feel like a lost little kid playing dress up in mummy’s closet 😂].

Secondly: your macaroons look absolutely scrumptious and now I’m drooling and craving sugary treats so thanks for that! 😉

Thirdly: Congratulations again on all your nominations for the Book Blogger Awards – it made me so, so happy when I saw your name for the voting round! *Throws confetti*

Next, and some good news: You 100% inspired me to bite the bullet and finally commit to buying the entire hardcover collection of the Lunar Chronicles series [Stars Above and everything!]. According to my tracking number [which I’ve been checking like, every freaking hour] they’re due to arrive next week, hopefully by wednesday! Guess what I’ll be reading next…

Finally: I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve been struggling again this month. If it makes you feel any better, my State [Victoria] is a hot spot as well and we’ve just been forced into Stage 4 lock down. I’ve been stood down from my job, we have a curfew and cannot leave our house unless we’re buying groceries. I can 100% relate to feeling trapped and like 2020 has been a serious waste. Honestly, if you need a buddy read, if you need to vent or just talk about random crap you know where to find me. I have plenty of 2020 memes to make you laugh. 😉

Sending you all my love, Alexandra 💙

    1. Ahh Alexandra this essay of a comment absolutely made my day thanks so much for writing it ❤

Thanks! It's shocking that I'm this old I still feel like I'm 15 or something and next year I'm going to be a 20 year old adult?? how did that happen.

Eeee the macarons tasted scrumptious too! Glad I made you crave sugary treats–now go bake some and report back haha.

Ahh thanks so much! I was honestly so shocked and surprised. But I love confetti so I will accept all the confetti you throw 🙂

YES! My plan to make the whole world read The Lunar Chronicles is working mwahahahaa. They're honestly all so amazing and I can't wait to hear what you think of them!

Ahh yikes on the hot spot, hope it's going okay. Our lockdown isn't as severe as yours so I guess technically I'm not as trapped, but I WISH it was as severe as yours because at this rate this is going with all the stupid people throwing "covid parties" (*face palm*… only in America, land of the dumb) we'll never be out of it. 2020 has definitely felt like a waste, although talking books and Disney with you has been one of the saving points! ❤ ❤

      1. AHHHHH KAY – MY BOOKS CAME EARLY! I REPEAT: MY LUNAR CHRONICLES BOOKS CAME EARLY!!! I”M SO EXCITED TO START READING!!! [So ready for those Disney vibes!]. I can’t wait to discuss this series and fangirl with you!

Also: I am ASHAMED that I forgot to send you a BIG hug for mentioning my Folk of the Air Bucket List. [I had every intention of including a big THANK YOU in my essay but I was side tracked by the macaroons and Lunar Chronicles]. So: Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for featuring my post. Honestly your ongoing support for my blog and friendship has been such a bright spot during 2020. You are the best! 💙💙💙

I cannot believe [actually I can because people are selfish] that people are throwing “covid parties”??? Like, are you STUPID??? I really hope things get better for you! Lots of love! xoxo

        1. YESSSSSS!! I can’t wait for you to love my badass fairy tale babies ❤ Ahh of course, I loved your post and it's totally understandable getting sidetracked by macarons and Lunar Chronicles! (also that reminds me… idk if you've read it yet but Heartless also by Marissa Meyer features all those amazing disney vibes and also all the baking including Cath's truly mouth watering sounding rose macarons…)

          1. I actually haven’t read Heartless but it’s next on my Books To Buy list! Especially after you raved about it in your post. 💙

Actually I’m super excited because I’m set to finish Crimson Bound tonight so I can FINALLY start tomorrow!!! AHHHHHH SO EXCITED!!! I’ll be screaming all my thoughts at you on Goodreads! 😉 🌸
