May 2020 Monthly Wrap Up // Online Class Struggles, Baking, And Percy Jackson Screaming (…again)

Hey all! Can you believe that it’s already June?? thank god we’re almost half way done with this hecking awful dumpster fire of a year. I felt like May passed fairly quickly, so let’s dive into the recap!

Reading

1. Spin The Dawn ★★★★ // I finally got around to reading this and it was pretty good! I really liked reading about the dresses and the lore and mythology.
2. An Enchantment of Ravens ★★ //  This was nowhere near as good as Sorcery of Thorns it was… okay, kinda instalovey, but also such a lush pretty world!
3. Since You’ve Been Gone (reread) ★★★★ //
This was available for free on Riveted Simon Teen this month lmao so I decided to reread it and wish summer 2020 would be like that
4.
What I Like About You ★★★★// This was super adorable to read about actual book blogging in a book! Also cupcakes ❤

5. A Heart So Fierce And Broken ★★★ // I hated how Rhen got the Tamlin treatment but besides that I loved it ❤
6.
Under A Painted Sky ★★★ // This was unexpectedly amazing I loved reading about the girls on the Oregon Trail
7. The Kiss of Deception ☆ //
Wow was this book really bad.
8. Up To This Pointe ★★★★☆ //
This was a super moving book that really resonated with me rn about when all your plans are ruined… also ballet and Antartica is cool

I’ve managed to be 7 books ahead of schedule so that’s exciting. I’ll probably increase my reading challenge goal up to 100. That’s what it was for the past three years, but I decreased it to 75 this year anticipating having less time to read due to being out and about doing fun college things… lmao no I have more time than ever.

Blogging

I’m finally back to regularly blogging! I’ve consistently put out 2 posts each week, Monday and Thursday, and also I’ve been blog hopping and for once in my life I managed to save all the posts I liked so I can link back to them here? I know nobody is more surprised than me.

I also made my own original tag, the Bookish Baking Tag, so please check it out if you’re interested and feel free to participate! Also in addition I did two other tags this month which is shocking because I’ve now done, like, more tags this month alone than all of January-April??

Life

  • Obviously the state of the world is awful right now. I was horrified reading the news this past week, and #BlackLivesMatter is very important. If you haven’t seen this page, I encourage you to check out ways to help (petitions, donations, support for protesters, etc) here, and do what you can: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/
  • Online school is… going. I’m loosing more and more motivation every day… two more weeks. Just gotta fight through two more weeks lmao.
    • I am so unproductive I swear I don’t even know what day it is I was shook when I realized it was time to write this post
      • also I’m… very behind… on my online lectures……..
    • I also registered for fall classes, and it’s all but confirmed that they’ll be online so that’s… happening
  • I’ve been doing even more baking! I made macarons for the first time, and they actually came out pretty well and after all I’ve heard about them being super hard I’m surprised and proud!
  • I spent way too much time making Piccrews… enjoy real Kay vs Fantasy Princess Kay (link here, piccrew made by Polika)
  • Percy Jackson is coming to Disney+ ahhhhh!!! I’m so exciteddddd! My may 2020 can be defined by squealing over Percy Jackson.
  • I’ve been doing more songwriting, further proving that I’m a daughter of Apollo!
  • I’ve been… less sad than April, but still pretty sad most days. Ups and downs. All we can do is our best and try not to cry everyday, right?

  1. Completely agree with you on An enchantments of ravens and Spin the dawn. I’ve dnf’ed the kiss of deception twice, so great to get confirmation that maybe it’s not worth a third try. Also congrats on the macarons!

  2. May has certainly been up and down but I’m glad to hear all your highlights and lowlights! I’m currently reread Spin the Dawn and falling in love with the story all over again, makes me even more excited for the sequel! Ooh I love both fantasy princess and real Kay – I saw these floating around Twitter and they all look so good!! Hang in there with online school you’re almost there!! ❤

  3. I didn’t think the year could get any worse but May 2020 said nah. I’ve been struggling with online classes as well, mainly because it’s hard to learn in an environment that I associate with non-school stuff and relaxing. It’s reassuring to know that I’m not the only one losing motivation 😭😂

But at least you still got some great reading done! I’m glad you enjoyed Spin the Dawn! It was one of my favorite reads of 2019. I still need to get my hands on A Heart So Fierce and Broken, I’ve heard such great things!

  4. I definitely agree that thank goodness we’re at June and 2020 is almost halfway over!! I loved reading this recap.❤️Congrats on all the reading and blogging you did in May, that’s amazing!! Ahh, this made me want to reread Since You’ve Been Gone, although maybe it’ll just make me sad that this summer is going to look nothing like that haha. Good luck with finishing your online classes- you got this!! I hope you have the best June xx

  6. First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SHOUT OUT! I had so much fun [probably a little too much fun!] writing that Twilight post and I was so surprised by the reaction it got. I’m so honored that you featured it on this post. 💙💙💙

Second of all, you made macaroons??? Macaroons are only my favorite treat ever! Especially pistachio macaroons or rosewater macaroons. My mouth is actually drooling… I’m going to have to got out and get some now! 😂

  9. Since You’ve Been Gone is one of my fave summer reads so I definitely need to reread it at some point! & What I Like About You also sounds so cute – love that it’s from the perspective of a book blogger!!
Loved reading your recap (can’t believe it’s June already?!) and I’m glad that May was better for you.
Hope you have a great June!💗

  11. I absolutely adored the writing and setting of An Enchantment of Raven so much so that I didn’t even care if the romance or plot were a bit lacking! And I’m so happy to have found someone that’s read Up to This Pointe! I thought it was a really great book that I learned so much from!

And I’m so excited to do your tag! We’ve been pretty good at getting to tags in a timely fashion, so hopefully we’ll get to it either this month or next month! It’s just a matter of timing because I cannot wait to answer all the prompts!

As for school, hang in there! Online school is super tough and making that transition in the middle of the year was the absolute worst. I just finished up my semester of online school, and I had such a terrible experience because of mental health reasons. If you need someone to talk to, feel free to DM me on Instagram. And as you said, it’s only 2 more weeks! And then hopefully you’ll get the vacation and relaxation you need!

Also, thank you so much for mentioning my post! I had a lot of fun writing it, and I’m so glad you enjoyed it enough to share it with others!

I'm sorry online classes have been so hard. I can't imagine how hard motivation for these are but best of luck for the future and I'm sending you lots of motivation !!
Songwriting is so cool !! I wish I could do that !! I hope you have fun with that and have a great June !! 🙂

  13. omg i’m so thankful we’re (almost) halfway through this year as well. i keep thinking that 2020 can’t get worse, but it somehow manages to surprise me over and over again. all my plans for this year are ruined too… there were so many school things i was looking forward to, and now that’s all down the drain, because next school year will probably be all online. anyways, i hope the rest of the year somehow still goes well for the both of us 🥺

  14. Ah it sounds like you had a great reading month overall! I also finally read Spin the Dawn last month and really enjoyed it, I’m curious to see where the sequel goes! 🙂 and I’d LOVE to read Under A Painted Sky sometime soon, this book sounds so lovely!
    I hope you’ll have a lovely May ❤ ❤

  15. Awesome reading month! I’ll keep my little fangirl lips sealed about Kiss of Deception LOL

I agree with everything you said about Enchantment, but still loved it sooooo much. Felt like a nice summer, daydream type of book. I just was feeling the whole setting and simpleness of it.

Also, who doesn’t love Ella Enchanted?!?!

  16. Up To This Pointe sounds like a good book! I’ve seen it being recced before in one of blogs I followed. Macarons! Believe it or not, I’ve never tried it before.

My May was kinda average. What’s different was that we celebrated Ramadan and Eid during the month and it just felt so different what with the pandemic going on and all of that.

Reading wise, I didn’t read anything 😣 I found it hard to focus on the sentences and just couldn’t get myself to enjoy the story.

      1. Macarons are the first one I’d try when I get the chance too! And thank you! My June has been nice so far. I finally manage to pick up a book and enjoy it as well 😊

  17. HAHAHA your review of “Kiss of Deception” – “wow was this book really bad” 😂 What a mic drop of a review! I can’t believe you made macarons – I’m not much of a baker anyway, but I’ve always found them so intimidating to try! 😱
