The Bookish Baking Tag // An Original Tag Ft. Smol Cinnamon Rolls, Classic Cookies, And Fluffy Cakes

Hey loves! So lately, in quarantine, it seems that the whole world has been doing a ton of baking! (At least that is what the lack of flour at every store is telling me -.-). I love baking, and I’ve definitely been doing more than normal, and having so much fun doing it! So I got to thinking–why not make a tag of matching books with baked desserts??

Is there any better way to begin the day than with a blueberry muffin? They’re the perfect classic breakfast food, and I love both baking and eating them! The beginning of Renegades was just as perfect for me! After a crazy prologue, it starts immediately with the main character, the super villain Nightmareabout to assassinate the leader…

asset 1pumpkinpid.png34848136

There’s no dessert that screams holiday to me more than a good ole fashioned pumpkin pie. I love baking it at Thanksgiving, and smelling all the holiday-esque spices–cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves–puts me in the mood for the season! Similarly, Together At Midnight is such a wonderful book to read during the holiday season! Taking place at New Years, in snowy New York, it’s such a perfect cozy seasonal read.

Cinnamon rolls are such a delicious, sugary sweet treat (and also I’ve been wanting to make them so badly but there’s no yeast anywhere!), and we all have our favorite cinnamon roll book babies ❤ I have a million and couldn’t choose but ultimately I did choose Simon from Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda because he is my smol soft sweet pure baby and I just need to hug him and protect him from the cruel world.

asset 1lemonpie.png18189606

Nothing screams summer to me more than lemon meringue pie! I just feel like lemons, airy meringues, lemonade sweetness, the color yellow–all so summery and happy! I’ve read so many amazing summer books and Since You’ve Been Gone, with a summer bucket list, working at an ice cream shop, skinny dipping, road tripping, apple picking, and more, gives me so many happy summer vibes. (wish we could have that kind of summer this year lol 2020 said nah)

asset 1funfetti cake.png28187

I feel like funfetti cake, with all its rainbow sprinkles, makes me feel like a little kid in the best way possible, taking me back to the time when life was simple and happy and there was no problem that couldn’t be fixed with a rainbow birthday cake. Rereading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (and the whole series, really) recently made me feel that way too, giving me all the childhood nostalgia and excitement and happiness of childhood!

asset 1chocolatechip.png1885

Chocolate chip cookies are like the classic dessert item to bake. They’re super quick and easy, and super super delicious. When all else fails, I can always turn to making some good ole fashioned choco chip cookies ❤ I don’t really like classics, but I did enjoy Pride & Prejudice more than most, and the formula and tropes from it never fail to make me happy.

asset 1oatmea.png25175898

Okay but like everyone hates and oatmeal raisin cookies and I don’t know why?? They need more love, people! I mean yeah they’re not my favorite but they’re still really good and sweet and yummy! Similarly, a book that really needs more love is Wendy Darling! I feel like nobody has heard of it and I’m just shouting into the void and nobody cares but it’s one of the best Peter Pan retellings I’ve read, and it’s so compelling, especially setting up Peter to be a villain! (I mean when you think about it, stealing children from their windows at night isn’t the greatest…)

asset 1angel.png10507293

Angel’s Food Cake is super light and fluffy and yet absolutely delicious! It’s like sweet air, right? The Selection is also pure air and fluff but it’s addicting and it’s getting a movie adaptation now and I couldn’t be happier. It’s kinda trash with no substance, but I’m 110% okay with that.

asset 1carrot.png32075671. sy475

I don’t love carrot cake, but it’s okay (and cream cheese frosting is delicious!). But the one thing it does have going is it makes me feel great about myself wow I’m so healthy what a fitness queen because even though I’m eating a cake I’m also eating carrots?? Not just 100% sugar but rather all that sugar and also veggies! A book that definitely has a good underlying message, not just sugary sweet, is The Hate U Give, which was such an amazing, bold, brave, book with an important story to tell.

asset 1macarons.png23437156

To be honest, I’ve never actually made French macaron sandwich cookies! I’ve never made them because they’re notoriously finicky and hard to get right, but they’re heavenly they’re so delicious and I am determined to try during quarantine. A book that intimidated me before I got into it was Six of Crows, because it’s somewhat long and it’s also so beloved I was so worried I wouldn’t get the hype and love it! I shouldn’t have been worried though–it’s one of my all time favorites now!!

asset 1eggtarts.png38326343. sy475

This one isn’t a super well known dessert (I think? In America where I live at least), but it’s my original tag, and I absolutely adore making (and eating!!!) Hong Kong style egg tarts. I’m Asian, and I always loved buying egg tarts at Asian bakeries like 85°C, but they’re so expensive so I decided to bake my own! And also I had to find a way to get my favorite Harley In The Sky, an incredible diverse book onto this list, right? It has amazing multiracial rep, and also Asian rep and mental health rep too!

asset 1banana.png26032825. sy475

Is it just me or is everyone in the world baking banana bread these days? I feel like I keep seeing or hearing about people baking it! Well, I, too, have bought into the hype and made banana bread–after all, it’s an easy, delicious way to get rid of those squishy overripe brown bananas! A book that I feel like everyone has read is The Cruel Prince! I remember when it came out back in January 2018, I felt like every other post I read, on my blog or Goodreads, was about it! It’s the most hype I’ve ever seen a book get, and it’s an amazing book well worth it!

  1. This TAG is amazing and I loved all of your answers. To be honest, I’ve never baked in my life. I’m from Spain, and baking isn’t really big here, but you’ve made me so hungry reading about these treats that I’m going to have to try some for myself

  2. I love this, it’s so creative! I totally agree about The Hate U Give, it’s so inspiring and such a good read. Also I am craving chill summer vibe books like Since You’ve Been Gone ❤

  3. This tag was so much fun!! Percy Jackson definitely gives me confetti cake vibes!! I’ve been baking a lot of chocolate chip cookies, and I’ve been improving (I burnt the first batch oops) which is exciting!

  4. I love this idea for a tag ❤ You are making me SO hungry right now, I might just have to go bake something myself! I guess I'm an outlier but I love oatmeal raisin cookies, haha! You have so many great books on this list– I'm really looking forward to reading Harley in the Sky. I've only ever heard great things about it!

  5. This tag looks like so much fun, I’ll have to do it 😉

I’ve never read anything by Akemi Dawn Bowman. She always has the best covers and they always seem so hard-hitting but still good reads. I’ll have to add Harley in the Sky to my TBR.

  6. I should not be reading this post before eating because now I’m dying for all the baked goodness!! Egg Tarts and Harley in the Sky is also the combination I didn’t know I need – now I want to make egg tarts and reread Harley 😂

  7. thanks so much for tagging me, Kay! lol, i wish i could be one of those productive people who used quarantine to bake, but sadly, I have no culinary skills whatsoever. Also, Since You’ve Been Gone is the perfect summer read ahhhh

  8. Ummm, first of all, how dare you make me so hungry! I’m supposed to be watching my calories after devouring like, nine Lindt bunnies in isolation over Easter. [Don’t judge me, Lindt bunnies are my kryptonite]. Second of all, this is such an amazing tag, Kay! I can’t wait to get started on it – probably while I bake some cookies because now my stomach’s grumbling like a monster. 😉 ❤

    1. Haha I’m definitely not judging; these days I’ve been baking suuuuper often but also… that means… eating all the sugar and desserts… and usually I can give them away too but since we’re all locked inside and not allowed to socialize……you know what there’s nothing wrong with single handedly eating a dozen cookies xD yay glad you like ❤

      1. I’ll tell you the worst thing about baking – the mixture! OMG I will literally eat the entire cake batter or cookie dough before it gets to the oven. I may or may not have made cookies just so I could eat them all “raw”. 😂 ❤

  9. This is the ultimate baking tag!!! I’ll tag myself lol and definitely do this! I love baking so much, and you’re so right about the shortage of yeast and flour. It’s ridiculous, and I’m getting annoyed since my yeast is steadily decreasing (quarantine is the perfect time to bake all that bread and bagel) 😅

Okay, I should talk about books, but lol, I have to talk about these treats!!
Macaroons are so hard to get right! I made them once, and I actually made my own almond flour since I didn’t have any, and it was going fine. I baked them, and I thought they were done, but the timer hadn’t gone off so I left them. They BURNED. 2 minutes, and they burned and stuck and lost their “feet” smh 🤦🏽‍♀️ I hope you have better luck with it!! And trust your intuition lol
And now that you’ve mentioned it, I have to know what egg tarts are, and I’m going to try and make them! Also, for me at least, I don’t like oatmeal raisin cookies because I don’t like raisins…I just don’t like it. But plain oatmeal cookies are amazing!!
Cinnamon rolls are so delicious and airy and 😍😍. They perfectly describe every sweet and adorable character who must be protected till the end of time 💖
I could go on, but I think I’ll stop here 😅😂

I’ve read the first 3 books in the PJ series, and they are honestly really good! Middle grade, but still fun reads that definitely make me feel like a kid again. I’m so glad you were a part of my inspiration to read it!

Amazing tag, Kay!! I loved this post so much 🖤✨

    1. Yayyy I can’t wait to read your post 🙂 Ikr I’ve been wanting to bake cinnamon rolls but I can’t because we ran out of yeast there’s none in any store, and the flour is in precious supply tooooo. Oh no! Macarons really intimidate me haha but I’m determined. Haha tbh I don’t really like oatmeal or raising but somehow I love oatmeal raisin cookies… idk I guess anything tastes good to me with enough sugar lol. PJO is super amazing it gives me so much childhood nostalgia I’m so glad you’re reading! Tyyyyy so glad you liked ❤ ❤

  10. Oh my gosh Kay I absolutely love this tag!! The graphics are so cute and the prompts and wonderful and this whole posts radiates positive energy and happiness and sweetness and I loved reading it. Thank you so much for tagging me, I can’t wait to participate!!💖

I just put Harley in the Sky on hold so I’m really excited to see it on this list and I’m glad to hear you loved and that it’s a great diverse read. Also I laughed at the part about feeling like a fitness queen after eating carrot cake because that is 110% me, I’m that person eating fruit flavored candy and then feeling good about how it’s at least reminiscent of a fruit. And yesss The Selection is the epitome of fluffy sweetness with really nothing inside but somehow very addicting!!? Again, I just loved this so so much and thank you again for tagging me and for making this!

  11. This is such a cute tag! You listed so many of my favorite baked goods, and I’m so excited that you tagged us, because that means I get to talk about each one in great detail! Forget mentioning books! That post will mostly be me talking about my love of cookies and cakes!

I also love, love, love how you matched the baked good to the prompt! Not only are the prompts clever, but they make so much sense together with their baked good! And I love how you said that oatmeal raisin cookies deserve more love, because I cannot agree more! I really enjoy them, and get so excited whenever I see them, but I know so many people that think I’m crazy for willingly eating them! And lemon meringue pie is definitely so very summery! Maybe that’s why I have the urge to make one sometime soon!

Thank you so much for tagging us! I can’t wait to answer all these adorable and clever questions!
