Top Ten Mermaid Books // Mermaids, Fins, Sirens, Selkies, And Others Set Under The Sea

Hey loves! Top Ten Tuesday is a book blog meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl! This week’s prompt is Freebie. For this week, I was thinking about the beach, since being summer and all, I’ve been going pretty frequently. And the other day at the beach I was just singing little mermaid songs and wishing I was Ariel, so I figured, why not do mermaid books?

1. Daughter of the Siren Queen

I love this duology! Pirates and sirens–amazing! Who wouldn’t want to be daughter of a siren queen?

2. To Kill A Kingdom

34499221. sy475

I love this darker grittier mermaid book. I mean, isn’t any book that starts with a girl ripping out and burying a heart bound to be good?

3. Sea Witch

36502054

Enough of the mermaid, I really enjoyed this retelling of the evil sea witch! It was so cool to see what drove her to that point.

4. The Wicked King

38237340

Obviously not a mermaid book, but a significant part of it takes place underwater with mermaids, so it definitely belongs on this list! This book is incredible!

5. Wake

10586539

This was one of the first upper YA series I loved, and I remember being so shocked by how gritty the sirens were–pulling hearts and ripping open bodies and all. And I absolutely loved them!

6. Forgive My Fins

6710476

This was I think the first YA mermaid books I ever read? I loved reading about a mermaid princess (who loves sushi by the way)!

asset 1

7. The Sweetest Kind of Fate

34321938

This is more younger YA, and not very well known, but I definitely loved it! I loved the idea of witches and sirens, and pulling a reverse little mermaid and giving up legs for a fin!

8. Selkie Girl

2752371

I barely remember this book, I read it so long ago, but I remember loving the idea of a selkie–not a mermaid, but a girl who can literally put on and take off a seal skin!

9. The Siren

25817407

Another guilty pleasure book–I know she doesn’t write good books but I’m such trash for Kiera Cass! As if the cover enough wasn’t enough to fall in love.

10. Deep Blue

18601430

I remember this was a bit boring, but I still enjoyed reading about royal mermaids!

  1. OMG, I love this topic! I read SO MANY mermaid books in my teens, but only of few of the ones on your list. I’m scrolling through Goodreads now, and honestly I don’t remember most of the mermaid books I read, but a few I do remember being pretty decent are: Of Poseidon by Anna Banks, Ascension by Kara Dalkey, and Lost Voices by Sarah Porter (this last one has a lot of darker themes tho).

And this week I was pretty unoriginal and did a “Favorite Reads from the First Half of 2019” list. But I also included The Wicked King on my list! 😉

  2. Oh so many of these books are on my TBR! Particularly your top 3. I really love mermaid stories, but admittedly haven’t read many. The book that got me into mermaids is Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant. Although this book is a bit more adult/horror, but it’s actually quite a great story.

  4. I. AM. IN. LOVE. WITH. YOUR. TOPIC.
I am such a big fan of siren/mermaid books and your list makes me so happy. Daughter of the Pirate King Duology (I flew through these books.. I love them… pirates and sirens and the sea), To Kill a Kingdom (AGREED. The start was already quite explicit and I love that like yes, greet me with some action from under the sea), Sea Witch (I love how this shed light to the sea witch though and omg there’s a sequel), The Siren (lol I agree, and that cover is gorgeous so I don’t regret having this book too)!!! YES TO THESE BOOKS. And thank you for this list. I’m definitely reading the ones I haven’t read yet.

  5. I am so here for the mermaid/siren prompt. You’ve got a few on here I loved (Hello, To Kill a Kingdom), and a few I’ve had on my TBR for ages (Sea Witch, The Siren, etc). I also totally agree and allow TWk being included on this list bc of the plot points that take place under the sea! Great twist on this week’s topic!

  6. This is such a cool list, I didn’t know there were so many books about mermaids! I think To Kill a Kingdom is the only one I’ve read. I didn’t know The Wicked King was set underwater – I guess the coer wasn’t enough of a clue, haha. Never heard of Forgive My Fins but I love the cover, now I’m intrigued! Great list! ❤

  7. Oh my gosh, a massive YES to this topic and your list. I really enjoyed The Sea Witch, and The Wicked King was just brilliant, but the rest of these I haven’t gotten to and CLEARLY I need to. My TBR is shaking in fear over me adding more to it!

  8. The only thing I disagree with is the opinion on Kiera Cass, I really love all of her books, and they tend to be some of the first books I recommend to people,
