Top Ten Characters I Relate To // Exposing My Socially Awkward, Nerdy, Asian Self

Hey loves! Top Ten Tuesday is a book blog meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl! This week’s prompt is Character Freebie. A couple months ago I missed the topic Characters That Remind Me Of Myself, so I decided to do it here with characters who are similar to me/I relate to!

1. Lara Jean // To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

Lara Jean is basically me in book character form. It’s definitely a reason I love that book so much. We’re both rather introverted, would prefer to stay in reading over going out to a party or game, love baking, she makes scrapbooks and I was in yearbook which is pretty similar, we both love our families and have close bonds with our siblings, and we’re both half Asian!

2. Elizabeth Bennett // Pride and Prejudice

What’s this? I’m actually praising a classic? I definitely related to how Lizzie though. We can both be a bit judgmental and have a quick temper at first, but definitely have well intentions despite it. We also both love reading, sightseeing, and our families!

3. Hermione Granger // Harry Potter

Every bookworm relates to Hermione, right? We’re both really studious nerds (I mean, I didn’t get a literal time turner, but I crammed in 5 AP classes senior year when other seniors were taking open periods, art classes, aiding, and easy stuff), love reading (of course!) and definitely have high aspirations in life!

asset 1

4. Cath // Fangirl

And we all love Fangirl too because we’re all fangirls at heart! Like Cath, I absolutely love fandoms (Harry Potter to her Simon Snow!) and love writing. I’m also socially awkward and honestly the thought of talking to people in college and leaving my dorm room terrifies me.

asset 1

5. Cress // The Lunar Chronicles

13206828. sy475

Cress is so sweet and probably the most relatable character of the whole series for me! I would say I’m a bit sheltered and I always tend to stay in my house… but I really want to travel and see the world! I also have probably unrealistic expectations for romance, and my friends mean the world to me! Also, I wish I were a cool hacker like her, but I do still geek out about science and math and that’s close enough… (I was so excited the day I downloaded a new operating system on my graphing calculator it was glorious I played with it all day long).

asset 1

6. Shane // Again But Better

41147279. sy475

I definitely had a few problems with this book, but one thing I love about it was how relatable Shane (also Christine Riccio loll) is. Like her, I’m totally nerdy and reference fandom stuff. It’s also my absolute dream to be a published author although I’m going in to college as a biology major (it’s my own choice though, unlike her). I’m also extremely socially awkward and also am old and have never had a boyfriend…

asset 1

7. Elle // Geekerella

Although I’m fortunate enough to not have her evil stepfamily, and unfortunate enough to not have met my movie star prince, I definitely relate a lot to Elle. We’re both super geeky/nerdy and into fandoms, and we both blog! In fact, Elle’s blog went viral after she wrote a post criticizing the casting of the actor in an upcoming movie, and my most popular post to date is one discussing (okay, criticizing a little) the casting of Lana Condor in To All The Boys…

8. Kiko // Starfish

40611543. sy475

The main thing I related to here was the beautiful biracial representation. Kiko is half Asian like me, and I’ve never felt as represented as I felt reading this book. Some of her thoughts and experiences concerning race are basically exact copies of mine… I feel heard.

asset 1

9. Rosie // Love A La Mode

35065036. sy475

Rosie is such a phenomenal baker…the kind of baker I can only wish and hope to be! I love baking almost as much as her, and her passion for it was so clear in the book! She also spends a lot of time frustrated, feeling like the absolute worst, which is something I related too much to, yet she still has so much fun with her friends!

asset 1

10. Leigh // The Astonishing Color of After

Here I related to Leigh’s experience as much as her personality. She’s biracial Taiwanese American, literally my exact mix (and yes this is the only book I’ve ever read like that), and her experience visiting Taiwan was basically a mirror of mine. The novelty of seeing new places, the stress and embarrassment of being unable to communicate with even her family, the feeling of strangeness like these are my people but I still don’t look like them…

  1. Great topic choice! I still need to read Geekerella and The Astonishing Colour of After – I’ve heard such good things about them both! I love Cress; it was the best book in The Lunar Chronicles for me, it was so much fun. 😊

  2. I loved reading this post!!
I love lara-jean even though I’ve only seen the movie I loved her personality (and style)– I definitely related to her being introverted. And while I don’t scrapbook I always love how they look!! 😊
I love Cress as well and have always related to her– just how she handled situations and wanting to travel but staying indoors– I’m the same!! 😂
This was a great fun post!! 💛

  3. I only know Elizabeth Bennett and Hermione, but they’re great choices. 🙂 (I realized this morning I hadn’t thought about any HP characters…I blame it on the fact I was doing this after midnight!)

  4. Such a great list! I think a lot of people related to Cath, and even to her relationship w/ Reagan, since they were such opposites, and a lot of times that happens in college seems like. Elizabeth Bennet too- such an awesome character!

    1. I gave it 3 stars. It was overall pretty fun and I related to Shane’s awkwardness and it was cool to see Europe, but there were some annoying and problematic aspects (especially with cheating) that I really didn’t like. If the premise sounds super cute to you I would read it and see if you like it, but if you’re just kind of interested then maybe pass.

  5. This is a super great post! I haven’t read a lot of the books you mentioned, but I relate to relating to Lara Jean and Hermione. Lara Jean because I’m very Hufflepuff and I love to read and spend time alone in my room, but I also like spending time with family and friends, and Hermione for the same reasons as you. 😉

  6. LOVE Lara Jean; she’s without question one of the most relatable YA characters I’ve ever met. Ah, yes! Elizabeth Bennet. Yet another amazing heroine. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland, Kay; I appreciate it.

  7. Aw, this is such a lovely post! Generally, I loved most of the characters you chose, and am very excited to read Again, But Better. I would love to read your post on the casting in TAtBILB, especially since I myself have a few gripes about the movie.
