Top Ten Tuesday: I Think I’ll Pass

Top Ten Tuesday is a book blog meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week’s prompt is Books I’ve Decided I’m No Longer Interested In Reading. Since I only recently joined Goodreads and don’t have a super long TBR to go through and think what the heck?, this was a bit harder, but of course I could still think of some 🙂 Warning: some of these might be unpopular opinions…

1. The Host by Stephanie Meyer: Well, I wanted to read this after I read Twilight. And then I got older and realized how…less than good Twilight is, and decided not to.

2. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: When I heard there was a new Harry Potter, I was so excited because I love HP so much! But all I’ve heard about this is that it reads like a terrible fanfiction, and don’t want to ruin my experience.

3. Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee: I really liked TKAM and was so interested when they said Harper Lee finally came back with another book. But…then I heard about it and I refuse to spoil my image of Atticus.

4. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher: I was really interested in reading this one when the TV show came out and everyone was raving about how good it was (I didn’t watch it). But then I saw many reviews saying it glorified suicide, which is SO UPSETTING AND DANGEROUS.

5. Hollow City by Ransom Riggs: Well, I thought the movie Miss Peregrine was pretty awful, but then I heard the books were much better and decided to go for them. But I read the first book was really underwhelmed (and also that romance was pretty disturbing…).

6. And I Darken by Kiersten White: I’ve seen so many good things about this one, that I thought about reading it. But after reading four of White’s other books and disliking all of them, I decided my time would be better spent somewhere else…

7. Until I Die by Amy Plum: I checked out all three books from the library at once; they looked so beautiful and their blurbs sounded so enticing! But after reading the first one I decided to take a pass.

8. Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz: I started reading this one when I was younger, but it ended up being due at the library before I could finish. Looking back now, I’ve decided that I don’t really need any more vampire romances. Especially after seeing the mediocore reviews on Goodreads.

9. Private by Kate Brian: I started reading this series when I was younger, but was surprised by all the mention of sex, and decided to pass on it until I was older. I’m older now, but don’t see the point in reading that superficial whiny teen angst (that seems full of all one star Goodreads reviews).

10. Gossip Girl by Cecily Von Ziegesar: Confession time: I read the entire Pretty Little Liars book series. And then I decided I wanted to start on these. Now it just seems so superficial and dumb. Sorrynotsorry.

  2. Oh gosh I wish I hadn’t read The Cursed Child…🙈 I’m in the group of people who didn’t hate it, but didn’t enjoy it that much either. I always feel so conflicted whenever thinking about that book because it doesnt feel true to the original harry potter books!

I was curious about ‘Reasons Why’ off and on and then again with the TV show, but yeah, it just doesn’t seem like a “me book.” Combine this with the dark themes, and yeah, that’ll go on the “no thanks” TBR. Not interested in reading “The Host” either. I did start it back when the DVD released, but never finished. Watched the film, liked it well enough and will leave it at that. 🙂

  4. The Cursed Child didn’t seem like a good idea when it came out so I decided to avoid it (I also haven’t read all of the HP book yet so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
    The only one that I’ve read on this list is And I Darken and I enjoyed it, though I haven’t read any of her other works other than Illusions of Fate

  7. I recently unhauled all of my Gossip Girl books, because I hadn’t read a single one and I loved the TV show so much that I didn’t want it ruined for me! I enjoyed Blue Bloods when I read it (back in like 2010) but I never felt inclined to carry on with the series – it’s such a shame, because the spines are so gorgeously bright.

  11. AMAZING LIST!!!!!!! I totally agree with Cursed Child, I REFUSE to let Harrry be written by someone else. how could this have been allowed???????
    and I’m also very protective of my book 1 idea of Atticus, I can’t imagine reading Go Set a Watchman and being disenchanted with him

  12. I loved Gossip Girl as a TV Show, but the books were terrible. I`m with you on a lot of your choices. “Thirteen Reasons Why” does glorify suicide, from my POV, and the Miss Peregrine trilogy is so boring. Also, as a Romanian, I`m quite offended by the lack of research in “And I Darken”.

  13. Good choice on avoiding Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. It was one of the worst books I’ve ever read and entirely predictable.

    As for Miss Peregrine’s, I tried to read them and felt bored. However, the movie is great!

  14. I’ve been wanted to read 13 Reasons Why for a very long time!
    But now that there’s a TV series and it’s super trendy, I lost all interest! That one should have gone to my TTT today! Damn…

  15. I read Hp and the cursed child and it was horrible and stupid, so you’re right to avoid it.
    I lost interest in thirteen reason why after hearing some really bad things about the author.
    But I’m still interested in And I darken, because I’m like obsessed with Dracula.

  16. I really didn’t like Twilight, but The Host was a pleasant surprise. I actually loved it and it’s not like Twilight at all. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was a mess though!

  17. I thought The Host was weird when I read it back in the days before blogging.. The movie came out and it’s so different from my imagination as I read.. so skipping it is not a bad idea 🙂 I love the cover of And I Darken so much but I haven’t read any of the author’s other books before.. so I’m still delaying.. I’m glad to know your opinion of her other books so if I delay this a little longer, I won’t feel so bad.. 🙂

  18. People hated The Curse Child… just don’t XD Know, for The Host, I have heard is not that bad! I watched the movie and it seems to be the same trio shxt… but! I like the idea of the host and all that XD I friend said it was good… but I don’t know… you have a good point “Twilight” XD

  19. Kiersten White is probably my only auto-buy author, so I’m here to convince you to read And I Darken. I have been reading her books since grade 8, and I loved every one I read, but looking back I realize her earlier ones aren’t great. And I Darken however, seems to have been enjoyed by people who didn’t like her other stuff. It’s a historical fiction that reads like a fantasy, so if that sounds like your kind of thing I highly recommend it. Sorry if I’m pushing it a bit too hard, since it’s ultimately your choice if you read it or not.

I read the Paranormancy trilogy and was so annoyed by how flat her characters felt, and how immature the main character sounded–she was supposed to be like 17 but read like a ten year old who said bleep instead of swearing and wanted a pink themed prom? If And I Darken is significantly different from Paranormalcy I might reconsider though haha 😀

  20. What a shame that you didn’t like Miss Peregrine’s home for Peculiar Children. I don’t agree though with the people who said that the books are better. This is a rare case where the book and the movie are equally as good in my opinion. Some details (big and small) have been changed, but Tim Burton did an amazing job on it 🙂 So I’m guessing that the overall story just wasn’t it for you.

    1. Tbh I was just super confused–I pretty much had no idea what was going on in the last half hour of the movie and I saw it with 5 other people who also couldn’t figure it out lol. Maybe I’m just not smart enough to get it lol–I tend to stay away from science fiction for that reason xD I’m glad you liked it though 🙂

  24. #1 -I pretty much do not read Stephanie Meyer books and certainly not ‘the host’

    #2 – they did say this is the 8th harry potter book, I still won’t read it because it’s not a novel, it’s a script

    #3 – I read somewhere this is actually the draft of ‘to kill a mockingbird’ and that’s the only reason I’m not reading this book, this isn’t a prequel or a sequel, it’s a draft plus why spoil the original by reading this?

    #8 – I don’t reaad books that have anything to do with vampires, I just don’t see why people like them

    I haven’t read or heard of the others on your list but they seems like books I would never read.

  25. I did read The Cursed Child and it was OK enough. I’m a very big HP fan and so I can say I read it. And I’ll never reread it. Which I regularly do with the HP books 1-8. 🙂

  28. I read the Gossip Girl books, although not all of them, and they were NOT good. You are definitely not missing out on them at all hahaha I did enjoy the Host though. I know Twilight is far from being a good book, but it worked at the time I suppose. Anyway, when I picked up the Host around that same age, it took me forever to get into it. It was very different from Twilight, asked very different questions and felt a bit more grown up. However, I completely understand the decision to put it on this list. I am not sure it’s a must read.

  29. I totally agree about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I don’t want to read the book and spoil a story I love… Even with more positive reviews, I doubt if I would read it. On some point a story is just finished. I stil like to read and see more about the wizarding world, though. I loved Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. What do you think about it?

    1. Yes ikr! I want Harry Potter to stay pure ❤ I really liked Fantastic Beasts (not as much as HP though!) I'm conflicted though–I love everything about the wizarding world and really want to see the next one, but I'm also conflicted because they supported Johnny Depp, who abused his wife, and kind of don't want to see the next one for that…

  30. I’ve read And I Darken and my honest opinion is that you’re not missing much! I also don’t have interest in The Cursed Child. Why add to an already perfect set of books? Great post!

  31. Of these, I’ve only read Cursed Child and I have mixed feelings about it. It was interesting and there are good parts, like Harry and his son’s relationship. But I’m not sure I like it. I would like to see it performed one day so I can judge the play as it was meant to be seen.

  32. Fair enough about the Host. And yeah I have no desire to read Cursed Child either. Or Go Set a Watchman- I love Atticus Finch too much for that. I’m personally not keen on Thirteen Reasons, so I don’t blame you for leaving that one. And yeah I’ve no plan to read Gossip Girl either. Great list!

  33. I think Jay Asher’s book is definitely a topic of.. discussion. I can understand why people say it glorifies suicide, I guess in a way it most certainly does. But I also believe it shows how much of an impact small actions can have on someone life. That doing only one small thing, can cause a snowball-effect and have giant consequences. I guess it’s just a matter of how you look at it and what you’ve been through yourself.
    On the other hand; ever since all the accusations thrown in Ashers’ directions, I don’t even want this book on my shelf anymore. Literally unhauled it. :’)

  36. I know people who could just not get into The Host. So I picked it up and pushed through it and actually ended up really loving it! I have the HP and the Cursed Child on my shelf but I’m too scared to read it!!! 😭
