Top Ten Tuesday: I Can’t Believe I Read That!

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme post hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.  This week’s topic is Books I Can’t Believe I Read. Since I read all the time, and a lot of the time I just pick up books that seem interesting without hearing anything about them/reading reviews, there’s a lot of these.

1. Sucks To Be Me by Kimberly Pauly: This entire book was just a high school girl who acted like she was 12 whining about being a vampire. And the vampires in this book were even more pathetic than in Twilight.

2. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens: It’s not that I can’t believe I read this. I’m straight up amazed that I did it. It was assigned reading for freshmen in high school and pretty much impossible to get through. And the only good part was the last chapter…sigh.

3. The Devouring by Simon Holt: I don’t read horror. Or watch horror movies. I’m a sunshine daisies kind of girl who is far too easily scared. Of course me being me, I was halfway through this book before I realized it was horror and by then I just had to finish it. A very scary experience.

4. Sweet Little Lies by Lauren Conrad: This felt like fan fiction I would write when I was twelve. It made no sense, had superficial, silly characters, and had me wondering how did this even get published?

5. Die For Me by Amy Plum: This literally felt like knockoff Twilight. If you’re going to go for a superficial paranormal romance, might as well just read the original. I was enticed by the gorgeous cover and that was the end for me.

6. Elixir by Hillary Duff: My problem with this book is that the plot was pretty much exactly the same as The Immortals by Alyson Noel. And I didn’t realize that when I read this literally right after finishing the latter. And the actual writing is much, much worse. So I felt like I read the same story only written extremely poorly.

7. Born at Midnight by C. C. Hunter: I feel like this book could have been really good with all the paranormal creatures. But it turned into a completely romance dominated book where the selfish protagonist spent the entire time leading on two guys.

8. Great by Sarah Benincasa: This is a horrible retelling of The Great Gatsby. Gatsby is a straight up masterpiece. One of my favorite classics of all time. This book felt like it was laughing at the original. It just couldn’t compare at all.

9. Twilight: It’s not so much that I can’t believe I read it as it is I can’t believe I liked it! Going back and skimming through it…does Bella do anything besides be clumsy and talk about how hot Edward is in the entire thing?

10. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle: This was a good book! I can’t believe I read it when I was so young (early elementary school, I believe). It took me forever to get through because I didn’t understand half of it (Kid Kay: what’s a mitochondria? Old Kay: The powerhouse of the cell), and I’m high key proud.

Thanks so much for reading and comment below if you did TTT as well so we can compare lists!

    1. Ahh I am not alone! I read it for about four chapters becuase I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and then threw it (the only book I have ever thrown) when she dreamed about Edward, or whatever his name is.

  1. I remember reading Sucks to Be Me and laughing at how ridiculous it was. And I agree about Twilight – I did enjoy it, despite some of the more silly aspects. Was highly disappointed with New Moon.

YES! Someone else who read A Wrinkle in Time in elementary school! It’s one of those books I need to go back and re-read now that I understand science. 😀

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  2. So many “Twilight” inspired books out there hey, I guess everyone wanted to jump on the wagon!! So I absolutely LOVED Twilight when it came out. I was obsessed…I kept re-reading and I just thought it was amazing. I then moved on and read better books and then went back to it, realising that it is problematic and TERRIBLY written. We were all sucked in hahaha!! I also didn’t know Hilary Duff wrote a book, I learnt something today!! Great post!!
